How Pearl Quality is Evaluated

Pearl quality is assessed across five core value factors: luster, nacre thickness, surface quality, shape, and size. Of these, luster is typically evaluated first it determines how light reflects off and through the pearl's surface, and is the single most reliable indicator of overall quality. A pearl with exceptional luster can command significant value even where other factors are moderate. Nacre thickness underpins luster over time; thin nacre degrades, while thick nacre ensures a pearl remains beautiful for decades. Surface quality and shape are assessed alongside nacre, with round pearls and clean surfaces commanding a premium though certain baroque shapes are valued for their individuality. Size is evaluated last, as it amplifies the impact of the other four factors rather than standing alone as a quality indicator.
